Bridge the Gap

CITB, in partnership with Hochtief (UK) Construction Ltd. and BAE Systems, has developed a new learning resource for teachers and students in secondary schools.
Although the materials have initially been designed for pupils at KS3, they may be extended for KS2 or KS4.The resource is based around the construction of the Holywell Bridge in Chippenham, Wiltshire.
The aim is to bring together the disciplines of maths, science and design/technology and to show how they are used to solve difficult engineering problems. ‘Bridge the Gap’ contains full lesson plans, worksheets, instructions and interactive teaching material for a five week period prior to an ‘Action Day’, during which pupils solve and trial their own solution to the problems involved in designing a bridge in an unusual context of the kind presented at Holywell.
Download the file (4.5Mb)
You will need Winzip (PC) or Stuffit Expander (Mac) to open this file. Note: once you have downloaded this file, your computer should automatically convert it into a folder called bridgethegap. To start the resource, open the file index.htm in Internet Explorer or Netscape.
