Discovery South East. Science and Technology Days for Primary Schools
Our Aims
- Discovery South East days focus on ‘Scientific Enquiry’, enabling children to explore and understand concepts in an exciting way.
- All activities are based on national curriculum key objectives.
- STEM SUSSEX is a non-profit making organisation and as such Discovery South East is delivered to you at cost price.
- Modules can be booked individually or combined as bespoke packages to suit the needs of your school.
- Modules are all adapted for SATs revision.
- Our deliverers are all qualified teachers.

Discovery South East Modules
Pneumatics & Hydraulics KS 1&2 (one day for whole school or KS)
Explore the compression of solids, liquids and gasses. Make a pneumatic monster, design and build a pneumatic boat or car and make a water rocket fly; all by storing and moving energy in air.

Structures KS 1&2 (one day for whole school or KS)
Test the strength of materials and shapes and use your knowledge and understanding in a challenge to design and build a bridge that can carry the weight of a toy vehicle.

Take a look at the six simple machines and how they combine together to make more complex machines. Investigate levers and pulleys and create and combine simple machines to solve a problem.

Forces & Gravity KS 2 (one day for whole KS)
Investigate gravity and air resistance. Design a fair test and complete the Egg Drop Challenge.

Electrical Circuits & “Circuit Detectives” Upper KS 2 (one day for Y5/Y6)
Become a Circuit Detective. Identify faults to repair electrical circuits. Draw circuit diagrams and symbols to help your investigation. Predict the effect of changes to a circuit and observe results.

*** NEW *** Understanding Electricity KS 1 & lower KS 2 (half a day for one class at a time)
Using specialised equipment which clearly shows all components of the electrical circuit and the unbroken ring of conductors, pupils are able to visually access the world of electricity.

Programme a barrier using CoCo Software, and use traffic lights and light sensors to control cars as they enter a car park.

Data Logging with LogITs KS 2 (half a day for one class at a time)
Log temperature, sound and light levels around your school. Display data on your computer as graphs for analysis.

Costs
- Price per day.
- Ideally, Discovery South East one day events, are delivered to a minimum of 90 pupils and a maximum of the whole school.
- SATS revision modules are targeted at single year groups.
The programme is sponsored by Lloyds Register to enhance Primary Science and Technology across the South East Region.
