Key Stages 3 / 4

The objective of the day is to introduce KS3 and KS4 students to the world of 3d design using computer modeling packages. The technology allows the user to produce a ‘solid’ model of a product on the screen and then be able to modify it with a live design on the screen.

Antweight Challenge Robot Tournament

Key Stages 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

An exciting Design and Technology workshop for KS 1, 2, 3 or 4 in which pupils build remote controlled robots and then compete in a number of challenges. All the components are provided to make antweight (1 pound) robots.

BA CREST (CREativity in Science and Technology) Award Scheme

Key Stages 3 / 4 and Years 12 / 13

BA CREST is a nationally recognised accreditation scheme for project work in the fields of science and technology. Aimed at students aged 11 -19, the awards encourage students to develop their scientific curiosity, problem-solving and communication skills.

CREST Star Investigators

Ages 5 - 12

CREST Investigators is a brand new, UK-wide award scheme that enables children to solve scientific problems through practical investigation. The activities focus on thinking about, talking about, and doing science. They are designed to be used primarily outside of class time (e.g. in a science club), though some are suitable for use in the classroom.

Funmaths Roadshow

Key Stages 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 and Year 12

Around 50 puzzles are set out on tables in a hall or large space by the SETPOINT Deliverer. Each crate contains puzzles for the appropriate key stage ranging from simple mathematical problems to logical challenges, making this resource suitable for pupils of all abilities.

Radio Workshops

Key Stages 2 / 3

A Design and Technology workshop for Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils in which they assemble a working radio from the kit provided. The pupils then take their own radio away with them to experiment with short wave listening at home. The workshop was piloted by INTECH Science Centre during National Science Week 2001 and uses Guglielmo Marconi’s first transatlantic wireless signal as its focus.

Rapid Response Engineering Challenge

Key Stage 4

A one day problem-solving activity for Y9 pupils based on the needs of an area after a natural disaster (in this case hurricane Mitch in Honduras) and the key role civil engineering plays in providing the essentials for survival. It introduces students to key concepts of Civil Engineering in an exciting, yet structured and informative way.

Spark it Up : Electricity and Magnetism

Key Stage 3

A presentation in association with the University of Brighton with inspiring demonstrations. The sessions aims to promote enthusiasm and interest in science and further develop understanding of key concepts of electricity and magnetism for KS3 SATS.

Key Stage 4

A business simulation activity designed to provide up to one hundred KS4 students with the opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills by understanding how a manufacturing company works.

The Engineering Education Scheme

Year 12

The Engineering Education Scheme in England encourages students in Year 12 to recognise the importance of engineering by providing an opportunity to experience a challenging project in partnership with industry. The students are those high flyers who will be tomorrow’s leaders of industry.

Aimhigher Sussex offers a wide variety of activities for ‘target’ school and college students from the ages of 13-19.  These aim to stimulate interest in further study and develop skills and self-confidence.  Activities are organised by a school or college coordinator with the help of the Aimhigher Area Coordinator.

Royal Botanic Gardens Kew - Wakehurst Place

Wakehurst Place, in the beautiful High Weald of Sussex, is an outstanding botanic garden and conservation area, managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. At Wakehurst Place, there is great emphasis on conservation, with the Millennium Seed Bank - the world’s most ambitious conservation project, firmly established. Wakehurst Place offer self guided visits, assisted visits and special activity programmes.

RSPB Pulborough Brooks - Educational Visits

The RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve is a restored wetland site managed for the conservation of wintering wildfowl, breeding birds and other wildlife. Set in the beautiful Arun Valley it also contains grassland, woodland, hedgerows and scrub which are important for many species of birds, small mammals, insects and plants.

South Downs Planetarium - Presentations for Schools

Key Stages 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

The effective teaching of astronomy involves viewing the night sky, but to take an entire group of pupils “star-gazing” is impractical for many reasons. A planetarium solves this problem by bringing the night sky to students. It makes clear many of the basic aspects of astronomy and space science in an exciting and effective way.
