STEM Ambassadors
STEM Ambassadors are committed and enthusiastic volunteers with a genuine desire to support education. They work with teachers and young people to encourage a greater interest and activity in science, technology, engineering and maths and the career opportunities they offer.
All Ambassadors involved in the programme are volunteers, employed across a broad spectrum of STEM disciplines and. With over 1000 Ambassadors in Sussex, they represent a diverse range of employers and stages of career. From undergraduate student to retired professionals, all are enthusiastic role models for young people about the benefits of STEM as well as the different routes in to a STEM career.
STEM Ambassadors are:
- Of all ages and backgrounds
- Share a commitment and passion for what they do
- Have the willingness, ability and enthusiasm to work with young people and teachers in a wide variety of settings
- Are CRB checked, given an induction programme to enable them to contribute effectively and are offered regular training sessions to update their knowledge of the current school system
How can a STEM Ambassador be involved in your school?
STEM Ambassadors enrich the curriculum in a variety of ways. They can help with:
- Supporting teacher delivery of the STEM curricula, including lesson planning and practical activities
- Bringing in specialist equipment or expertise to your classrooms
- Development of a varied teaching and learning style
- Incorporate them in to regular lessons or arrange a special “Visit Day”
- Updating knowledge of contemporary science, technology and research processes
- Supporting teachers in enhancing their own knowledge
- Showing pupils how to develop improved scientific enquiry skills
- Accompanying visits off-site
- Tours to companies can be arranged if suitable
- Setting up, expanding and supporting extra-curricular activities such as after-school clubs, awards and competitions
- Giving an extra dimension to your existing STEM club
- Linking local companies to schools
- Many Ambassadors have expressed an interest in linking more firmly with a local school, changing one-off visits into a regular commitment to support a school
- Enhancing your pupils’ interest in STEM subjects
- Showing STEM subjects in context

Please allow four to six weeks notice as most ambassadors are working individuals who need to arrange time off to volunteer.
