May Gurney Challenge: 4 December 2007

Event:

May Gurney Challenge: 4 December 2007, Brighton University, Moulescoomb Campus

What happened:

7 schools from East and West Sussex entered 15 teams of Year 10 Pupils to design and build a bridge. Equipped with paper, sticky tape and nuts and bolts the teams were tasked with researching and designing their bridges before building them. They then had to present and sell their design to a panel of experts: engineers from May Gurney and East Sussex County Council, who judged the entries on design, aesthetics, strength, teamwork and presentation skills.

Who was involved?

The day is organised and facilitated by the May Gurney young persons Team. Their role is to encourage young people to get interested in Engineering and Construction and develop Apprentices and Graduates as they take their first steps into the profession. Setpoint Sussex, a training and development organisation based at Brighton University hosted the event and coordinated the invitations of the schools. Setpoint are part of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) an organisation created to promote interest in these subjects to meet employer needs for STEM skills.

The panel of “experts” included Employees from May Gurney and East Sussex County Council. As well as judging the entries, they offered advice and encouragement to the teams throughout the day.

Awards The Winning Team was from Ringmer Community College (pictured above.) They designed a bridge that was soundly engineered, had a high strength to weight ratio and was boldly designed. They were presented with a cheque for £500 towards equipment for the school plus individual gift vouchers.

Special achievement certificates were given to several other teams who excelled in other areas such as crisis management, teamwork and marketing.

A special mention goes to the Teachers who formed cross-school teams and used their considerable experience and knowledge to build some very impressive (but possibly over-engineered) bridges!
