Nuffield Science Bursaries
Nuffield Science Bursaries offer up to 1,000 funded places a year, so that students across the UK can get an insight into the world of scientific research and development, including areas of technology, engineering and maths.
Placements are offered to students in Year 12 studying science, technology, engineering or maths. Through the scheme, students get the opportunity to work alongside practising scientists, technologist, engineers and mathematicians in the workplace.
Nuffield students can make a great contribution to your organisation and its ongoing projects, giving you some enthusiastic extra support to help initiate, progress or complete work programmes. You can benefit from the fresh ideas and hard work that the students bring to your organisation, and also from the links generated with local schools and teachers.
To take part in the scheme, companies are asked to provide at least one project lasting between four to six weeks during July and/or August.
By agreeing to host a project for the scheme, you can:
- Spread knowledge of your organisation's activities
- Bring fresh-thinking to your existing projects
- Develop staff skills through the mentoring of Bursary students
- Strengthen education/industry links
- Demonstrate your commitment to education
- Further the work of your organisation.
The company's role in the scheme:
You need to provide students with a defined role in your company that achieves agreed learning outcomes. The placement may be a stand-alone project (perhaps some pilot research) or may form part of a larger project or a particular customer order. As long as well-defined learning outcomes can be achieved within a four to six week period, Bursary students can get involved with any aspect of your organisation's research or business, and help you further your projects.
Bursary students are paid £80 a week by the Nuffield Foundation, which is administered by their Nuffield Co-ordinator - so there are no financial contributions required of the company.
Whilst supportive supervision is important, students will value the opportunity to use their own initiative and work independently. It is possible to take on two students to work on the same project, or in the same department, however each student must have a named supervisor who will oversee their project (but the direct supervision can be shared between colleagues).
